The Lorax (2012) Movie Review

Yesterday my friend and I went to see The Lorax. Being a huge fan of 2008's Horton Hears a Who, I was rather excited to see what they did with this one.

I liked it. A lot. It was well done in my opinion, but there were some flaws I should point out.

  1. The Thneedville scenes didn't really feel like they matched the whole "Dr. Seuss" theme.
  2. They also seemed like a bit of a filler.
  3. It would have been better to just focus on the Once-ler being the "bad guy" instead of two "bad guys"
I'm not saying those scenes were bad, but I think the movie would be fine without them. The best scenes in my opinions were the ones about the Once-ler's past with the Lorax. They kept that Dr. Seuss look while staying very very true to the original story.

However, again I'm not complaining. Nothing in the movie was really bad, and besides the Once-ler/Lorax/forest scenes were more frequent and longer anyways. (or at least it seemed that way.)

And another thing about Once-ler. In the original story, he's a character that is designed to be hated. You dislike him from the start. But in this movie, he isn't "bad" really. He pretty much is a guy who wants to make something of his life, and then gets totally corrupted by greed. So you end up liking the guy, and even when he messes up (big time too) you still don't hate him really.

Now, for the animation. It was very well done, I was seriously impressed. Especially in the forest. The bears, the trees, the scenery, everything looked amazing. The art was very well done, and I was very pleased.

So I noticed how this film has mixed reviews. Understandable. Like I said, I think most of the dislike of this movie comes from the Thneedville scenes. But honestly, those parts aren't even in there too much it seems, and the forest scenes make up for it fully.

Its like with Horton Hears a Who. The jungle scenes I wasn't too fond of, but the Whoville scenes made up for it. Just a comparison there.

I'd like to make a note here, I enjoyed a LOT about it, but I don't want to go into that because of spoilers. You'll just honestly have to see for yourself!

So as a final score, I'd honestly give this movie about 8/10 stars.

If you love animation and family movies, go see it. Kids will love the colors and teenagers and adults will enjoy the themes behind it.

Thanks for reading.
